Some background information on SINN:In spring 2001 the project SINN "Searchengine Network in the International Natural Science Network" started to enhance the distributed information system PhysNet to a fast and stable service by setting up a network of independent but cooperating Harvest-base search engines and building an active network of PhysNet web site mirrors. The project SINN is supported by the German Academic Network Organisation (Deutsches Forschungsnetzwerk e.V. - DFN), with funds of the German Ministry of Education and Research (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung - BMBF) and the Government of Lower Saxony (Landesregierung Niedersachsen). PhysNet is under the auspices of the European Physical Society (EPS) and several National Societies. In December 2001 the SINN01 - First International Technical Workshop of the project SINN took place in Oldenburg. The objective of this workshop was to bring all partners of SINN and PhysNet together and to jointly design and set up the mirror-network of PhysNet. Additionally formal and technical cooperations of Physics Societies and with other fields such as Mathematics have been discussed. SINN02 - the 2nd International Conference and Technical Workshop of the project SINN, held in Oldenburg in November 2002, focused on how to improve technically the network of independent but cooperarting national and regional Harvest-brokers and -gatherers. SINN02 was complemented by an one day conference on 'Open Distributed Science Information Management', where different field specific portals for sciences (with distributed content) were presented.
